1.
A delicate whisper A wave on the shore A voice for the rest In the absence of more Hope that I'm still persuasive I've got no microphone We can't exist alone We can't exist alone We can't exist alone The tables are turning Back into trees Articulating A vague memory We were barefoot and swinging Wind in our hair Won't you take me there Won't you take me there Won't you take me there
2.
Any Color 03:50
We can paint it any color On the surface it may seem like Theres no time to waste Gotta make it through the desert where the waterfalls evaporate But I can store away my thirst And take my time, I'll take it And use it To get lost In every detail After just a little while Ill get to know you well What you look like in the morning Before you've had your coffee Only then will I have known That all has found its place I could live here We could build things That have some meaning Sun come up and sun go down I like it when you're still around We'll build it right up from the ground We'll build it so it won't fall down I know that we are not too late I'll bet we still got half a day I'll bet we still got half a day We can paint it any color
3.
Dragoon 03:43
Sit and think In the shade Of the way That we'll get Through the maze Up ahead Cloudless and curious Leaning on a friend Theres more than one way To Dragoon But I can't keep Up with Cochise The old chief Was long gone When the police arrived Another wave of violence Weighing on his mind Breaking up the islands Up in the sky He found a little peace In Dragoon Nobody noticed The ghost Drink the light From the bright Desert moon I'm under your protection I'll be home soon We'll hide away in Dragoon We'll hide away in Dragoon We'll hide away in Dragoon
4.
Coyote 04:13
You've got a great imagination You're building wings so you can fly It takes hard work and concentration No guarantee that you'll arrive Driving through the reservation Coyote looked me in the eye Said "If you just, give your heart to raven She'll take you up into the sky" We're moving up Got their attention now Keep climbing Remind them Who is holding up the sky
5.
Evocation 05:48
We are joined at the hip In an ancient human tradition Enchanted and candlelit Though I could not have imagined it You held the world and flattened it This coin is extremely rare A goddess with two opposing faces Call it in the air Which direction will she stare? And will there be an answer there? We keep repeating our history Respice finum Sum quod eris I get goosebumps all over my skin When you sing the Carmen Saliare Some lose and some of us will win There's a scratchy violin Attending to our Evocation Slowly revealing the mystery Respice finum Sum quod eris
6.
I can still remember The song we sang together Echoing around the center I can still remember I can still remember The song we sang together Echoing around the center I can still remember Quietly surrender Cradled by a feather Floating through the air forever I can still remember I can still remember

about

Dragoon was inspired by the harsh and beautiful landscapes of the Sonoran desert. I wrote the the title track of the album during Covid lockdown while on a writing retreat in a cabin at the foot of the Dragoon mountains. The range is only a few miles from the border with Mexico and is the traditional home of the Chiricahua Apache. This has always been an extremely violent place - the Spanish, Mexican, and American governments all waged their own wars against the Apache in order to expand and claim territory. Today the area is a major human trafficking route. Migrants fleeing gang violence, wars, and worsening climate conditions are funneled into this unforgiving desert in order to attempt a better life. The song imagines a glimmer of hope in this landscape, a place of refuge in hills that fades in and out of a desert dream.

The remaining songs, some newer and some written for previous projects, somehow fit together like pieces of a puzzle. A theme of extinction emerged - extinction of culture and language, extinction of species, extinction of the old time ways. Change and adapt. How do we embody our receding window of reality? Like we do with any other shift in human history: Turn to the prophets, comedians, and get lost in the music.

A wide range of Tucson-based musicians were recruited to create the sonic atmosphere on Dragoon. There are guest appearances by members of Desert Fantasy, Los Esplifs, Sharkkheart, Katie Haverly, and bass clarinetist Charles Du Prez. The album is meant to take the listener on a journey into the borderlands, where history and mythology blend into polarized reality, and we search the horizon for a moment of peace.
